What Makes a Leap Year?

Leap years exist because Earth's orbit around the Sun takes approximately 365.25 days. Without the extra day every 4 years, our calendar would drift out of sync with the seasons.

The rules are: years divisible by 4 are leap years, except years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years, unless they're also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.

This means most people experience about 1 leap year for every 4 years of life, but the exact count depends on your birth date and the specific years you've lived through.
