Density Calculator

Calculate the density of any substance from its mass and volume. Essential for physics, chemistry, engineering, and material science applications.

Understanding Density

Density is a fundamental property of matter that describes how much mass is contained in a given volume. It determines whether objects float or sink in fluids.

The formula is: Density = Mass ÷ Volume. For example, if a rock weighs 500 grams and has a volume of 200 cm³, its density is 500 ÷ 200 = 2.5 g/cm³.

Water has a density of 1 g/mL, which serves as a reference point. Materials less dense than water float; those more dense sink.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the mass of the object
  2. Select the mass unit (kg, g, mg, lb, or oz)
  3. Enter the volume of the object
  4. Select the volume unit (L, mL, gal, ft³, or m³)
  5. Click "Calculate Density" to see the result
